Job Summary:

As a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in the examination and treatment of eye disorders. Under the direct supervision of a Department Manager and guidance of a provider, you will perform a wide variety of eye care duties, utilizing advanced ophthalmic techniques and procedures. Your primary focus will be on developing and sustaining productive relationships with members/patients, actively seeking information to understand their circumstances, problems, expectations, and needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure patient safety in the preparation and provisioning of care related to medications, procedures, infection prevention, and fall prevention.
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms by cleaning, stocking, and arranging supplies and equipment.
  • Review appointment schedules to determine patient visits order, greet and escort patients to examination or treatment rooms, and instruct or assist patients in preparation for scheduled procedures.
  • Interview patients to obtain ocular history, family history, systemic illness, allergies, and medications, and document in the electronic medical record.
  • Perform vision screening examinations as directed, recording data in standard format for interpretation by medical providers.
  • Perform other technical skills as directed by providers, including keratometry, retinoscopy, refractometry, potential acuity meter, visual field, photography, ultrasound, and contact lens removal, cleaning, and insertion.

Requirements:

  • Registered Medical Assistant (Washington) within 2 months of hire.
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate required at hire from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
  • Basic Life Support required at hire.
  • Computer experience in a MS Windows environment, keyboarding skills, and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with contact lens patients and products.
  • Experience working in an ophthalmology or optometry practice.
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant, ophthalmic assistant, or allied health professional program.
