Product Development Manager

The Product Development Manager at Windquest oversees the development and management of product lines, ensuring alignment with the company's strategic goals. This role involves planning, scheduling, and performing product line reviews, communicating results, and selecting vendors and items to maximize profitability. The successful candidate will manage profitability and implement strategic direction for assigned categories, including sales, margin, turnover, and gross margin return on investment (GMROI).
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop and implement product development strategies to meet business objectives.
- Manage product line reviews, including planning, scheduling, and communication of results.
- Select vendors and items to maximize profitability for assigned categories.
- Manage profitability and implement strategic direction for assigned categories.
- Direct action on slow-turning and obsolete merchandise in assigned categories.
- Set initial and strategic selling prices for assigned items to ensure a competitive position in the marketplace.
- Negotiate co-op, volume rebate, and store opening programs to support company growth initiatives.
- Develop annual assigned category sales, margin, and inventory budgets.
- Review product return trends and implement steps for improvement.
- Direct product packaging, quality, and graphic materials to ensure compliance with company standards.
- Supervise and manage employees as needed, establishing performance requirements, clarifying responsibilities, conducting performance appraisals, and planning for individual employee development.
- Keep supervisor informed of important developments, potential problems, and related information necessary for effective management.
- Coordinate and communicate plans and activities with others as appropriate to ensure a coordinated work effort and team approach.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in marketing, product management, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least four years of product development and management experience.
- Understanding of the basics of building a line of products leveraging a core and specialty approach.
- Ability to effectively balance creative talent with analytical acumen to properly manage assigned category financial performance.
- Proven track record of working collaboratively across functional areas.
- An understanding of the direct-to-consumer marketplace, preferably with catalog and web-specific experience.
- History of managing numerous projects effectively at the same time.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including excellent judgment, negotiating experience, independent problem resolution skills, and resourcefulness mindset.
- Creative out-of-the-box thinker with demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and drive, and the ability to recognize new ideas and opportunities.
- Resilient, not afraid of taking risks and learning from success and failure.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Knowledge of outdoor sporting goods products and industry preferred.
- Excellent computer skills, including Word and Excel.
