Highly Technical Rocket Propulsion Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Solid Rocket Propulsion Engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge rocket propulsion systems and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for national defense.
About the Role- Apply advanced propulsion modeling techniques to support the design and development of rocket-based weapon systems.
- Use physics-based concept design tools to synthesize booster stack and kill vehicle concepts, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
- Perform concept performance assessments at the weapon level, including trajectory simulation and optimization, to validate system designs.
As a key member of our Propulsion Engineering team, you will work closely with system analysts to evaluate system-level performance and provide technical expertise to drive innovation and improvement.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and apply advanced propulsion models to support the conceptual and detailed design of rocket-based weapon systems.
- Lead detailed propulsion system assessments to identify areas for improvement and optimize system performance.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop new internal research and development ideas and pursue innovative weapon concepts through IRAD.
- Document efforts and deliver presentations to internal project teams and sponsors to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering (or similar) with 10 years of experience in the design and analysis of rocket propulsion systems.
- Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, heat transfer, and structures, with the ability to apply this knowledge to complex engineering problems.
- Experience with MATLAB programming and aerospace vehicle design, flight dynamics, and trajectory optimization.
- Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to set direction and work successfully with little supervision.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Competitive salary range: $90,000 - $330,000 annually.
