Job Summary

The Genetic Counselor Assistant is responsible for providing support to the Cardiology Clinic team in the delivery of genetic counseling services. This role involves working closely with genetic counselors, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the smooth operation of the clinic.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview patients and document personal and family medical history
  • Request outside medical records and upload to Apex and departmental database
  • Assist with clinic flow, including scheduling, rooming patients, and managing coordination of joint visits with genetic counselors and physicians
  • Review research consent forms with patients and send Docusign consent forms
  • Prepare blood or saliva samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of UCSF
  • Monitor communications with genetic testing laboratories, including responding to requests for additional documentation or samples
  • Consult with healthcare providers and laboratories
  • Draw and update patient pedigrees and patient history forms
  • Enter data into the Cardiovascular Genetics database
  • Support clinical research projects, including consenting, data collection, documentation, and other tasks

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment. A bachelor's degree in a biological or health science is required, with knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts. Experience with patient and family contact in a community or medical setting is preferred.

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team setting
  • Bachelor's degree in a biological or health science
  • Knowledge of genetics and genetic concepts
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software
