About the Role

The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations seeks a highly experienced and skilled individual to lead our team of policy and planning experts in advancing the region's goal of a safe, reliable, equitable, and resilient transportation system.

This position will oversee staff focused on planning and policy research and analysis in support of the organization and other project work. The successful candidate will have excellent leadership and management skills, with experience in managing people with emotional intelligence, empathy, and listening skills.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead and oversee staff focused on planning and policy research and analysis in support of the organization and other project work.
  2. Support and mentor staff in the ongoing development of programs, including developing multi-year visions and fostering cross-agency collaboration.
  3. Collaborate with other groups in the agency, including the Communications and Engagement team; the technical teams responsible for carrying out multimodal transportation planning, modeling, and data analysis; and the MPO Activities team to jointly fulfill the organization's responsibilities and federal requirements.
  4. Coordinate internally to ensure the successful delivery of high-quality work products that comply with federal requirements, that are clear and engaging, and that provide meaningful resources for stakeholders.
  5. Work with agency leadership to respond to and partner with diverse stakeholders—including federal, state, regional, and local officials; other agencies; advocacy organizations; and the general public—and ensure that all are engaged in a fair, collaborative, and thorough manner.
  6. Provide ongoing, timely support and feedback to team members, and deliver thoughtful evaluations.
  7. Collaborate with the management and leadership team to provide input into agency operations and support implementation of the agency's strategic plan.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  1. A bachelor's degree in urban studies, planning, public administration, political science, government, public policy, or a related field, plus at least five years of staff management experience; or a master's degree in the fields listed above and two years of staff management experience.
  2. Proven ability to manage people with emotional intelligence, empathy, and listening skills.
  3. Ability to work collaboratively and manage concurrent streams of work.
  4. Experience applying quality assurance procedures to products and activities to produce work products of a high standard in the context of changing priorities and deadlines.
  5. Strong organizational and time management skills and attention to detail.
  6. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences, including stakeholders, elected officials, technical staff, and the public.
  7. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  8. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.

Benefits

This is a full-time position with an estimated salary range of $90,000-$110,000 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience. The organization offers excellent benefits, a flexible work environment, and opportunities for professional development.

Location

The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations has a hybrid schedule, combining time in the office with remote work. Employees must reside within a commutable distance from the organization's office, which is located in downtown Boston, in a transit-oriented and bicycle-friendly area.
