Risk Specialist Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Risk Specialist to join our team at the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. As a Risk Specialist, you will be responsible for overseeing workers' compensation insurance for all Tribal employees, monitoring work-related injuries and illnesses, and maintaining an internal database to track causal effects and address risk problems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Initiate, monitor, and track workers' compensation claims, and follow-up with carriers as required.
  • Initiate claims with property and casualty insurance carriers and assist employees and departments in the processing of claims.
  • Oversee workers' compensation insurance for all Tribal employees, including accident investigation, reporting, claims management, loss control, modified duty assignments, job classification coding, and premium audits and administration.
  • Monitor all work-related injuries and illnesses and maintain an internal database to track causal effects and address risk problems through correction of risk problems, training, or in-services focusing on awareness and prevention.
  • Maintain the internal property and equipment database for the insurance schedule, moving items between entities and departments as changes are made, and adding, changing, or deleting property in a timely and accurate manner with the insurance company.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analysis on property and equipment and its replacement value to determine if items should be added or deleted from the insurance schedule.
  • Investigate accidents that involve damage to property, ensuring that reports are submitted to the appropriate agency, entities, departments, or individuals.
  • Coordinate insurance claims, acting as liaison between insurance carriers and adjusters, the Risk Management Office, and affected entities or departments.
  • Read, interpret, and communicate property and liability policies to the appropriate persons, entities, and departments, advising when coverage affects specific departments.
  • Process invoices and statements, allocating costs to each entity or department.
  • Develop procedures pertaining to Risk Management and communicate procedures to affected entities and departments upon approval of the Risk-Emergency Manager.
  • Coordinate receipt and accuracy of Certificates of Insurance, ensuring that coverage is current and each certificate carries adequate coverage for its intended purpose.
  • Oversee driver record files for employees, obtaining driver's license information for employees who are required to drive as a condition of employment, and ensuring compliance with the Tribe's driver insurability requirements.
  • Participate in all safety inspections, including those conducted by the property and casualty insurance carrier, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Health Service, and workers' compensation carrier, ensuring that all affected departments and facilities comply.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations on safety statistics, trends, and related costs, developing recommendations and cost analysis for current and future development.
  • Assist the Risk and Emergency Manager with all emergency planning processes, emergency response training, and incident response and management.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as requested or required.
Qualifications:
  • AA/AS in Business, Safety Management, or closely related field, and 1 year of relevant work experience OR 3 years of experience in administering workers' compensation benefits for medium to large size companies.
  • Experience in computer software programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • General knowledge of budgets and accounting procedures.
  • Valid Driver's License for the state of residency and be insurable under the Tribal vehicle insurance policy.
  • Pass a thorough criminal history background check, including fingerprint check and pre-employment drug test.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in safety training.
  • Experience in Emergency Management planning, response, training.
  • B.A. in Business, Safety Management, or closely related field.
Language Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately, orally and in written format to staff and outside associates.
  • Ability to prepare statistical and other reports and documents, and present facts and information.
  • Ability to compose technical correspondence.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality always, including the ability to recognize situations in which confidentiality is required.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, apply analytical skills, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to work independently, taking responsibility for claims management and risk analysis.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Tribal Officials, Tribal staff and managers, co-workers, Tribal departments and entities, outside individuals, agencies, organizations, and groups.
  • Ability to understand and implement internal controls.
Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting a minimum of 20 pounds may be required.
  • Position involves standing, walking, bending, stooping, and long periods of sitting.
  • Adequate hearing is required to hear/talk with an individual, and to use a telephone on a consistent basis.
Working Environment:
  • Work is performed in a variety of environments, including office settings, outdoors in areas unprotected from weather, and in constricted spaces, with some exposure to environmental stress.
  • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
  • Frequent communication with applicants and Tribal employees daily, including telephone as well as face-to-face interaction.
