Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Primary Care Physician to join our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As a Primary Care Physician, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient-centered care to adults and older adults, assessing patients, and ensuring safe and efficient healthcare delivery.

Responsibilities
  • Provides quality patient-centered care to adults and older adults, as assigned by the ACOS of Primary Care.
  • Assesses patients by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills, identifying acute, non-acute, and chronic health problems.
  • Ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality healthcare delivery within the department.
  • Ensures appropriate initial evaluation, treatment, and consultation, as well as documentation, consistent with current VHA Directive and VHNIHCS policies on Emergency Medicine.
  • For admissions to the inpatient units, ensures a physician-to-physician conversation regarding the need for admission, including diagnoses, assessment, and recommendations.
  • Demonstrates sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.
  • Daily care of patients also entails regular interaction with nursing, coordination of consultations and care, and facilitation of diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures.
  • Other vital roles include communication with patients and their families, patient education, discharge planning, and communication with outpatient providers, arranging follow-up, preparing discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, and ensuring communication during hand-offs of care.
  • Ensures a sign-out to the oncoming physician to ensure an informed transition of care; coordinates with the admitting physician and consultants to organize diagnostic and treatment plans for all patients pending admission.
  • Maintains appropriate clinical privileges in order to fulfill the duties of assignment within Primary Care Service.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship.
  • Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Licensure and Registration: Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience/Qualifications
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible.
