Phlebotomy Specialist

Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist Float is responsible for performing technical procedures, such as venipuncture and capillary collection, to collect blood and other specimens from patients. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform venipuncture and capillary collection procedures accurately and safely
- Process specimens, including proper patient identification and labeling
- Assist in departmental training of new employees and students
- Participate in maintaining an efficient and productive work area
- Perform point-of-care testing and report results accurately and in a timely manner
- Rejection and recollection of specimens based on established criteria
- Participate in continuing education and proficiency surveys as needed
- Report instrument or procedure failures to supervisor or appropriate personnel
- Participate in required laboratory meetings
- Review and adhere to laboratory policies and procedures
- Provide technical information about tests to physicians and other healthcare providers
- Respond to collection of patient samples deemed routine, timed, or STAT
- Maintain current knowledge of hospital policies, state, and federal regulations
- Operate laboratory equipment safely and correctly
- Collaborate with other departments to improve patient care and performance
- Review pending and outstanding reports on every shift and follow up to resolve outstanding specimens
Requirements:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Courses in biology, chemistry, and computer science preferred
- Certification in phlebotomy preferred but not required
- Previous experience in a clinical laboratory is desirable
