Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Life Insurance Underwriter to join our team at Security Mutual Life Insurance. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting individual life insurance applications within company guidelines and approval authority.

This is a challenging role that requires attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and excellent communication abilities. As a Life Insurance Underwriter, you will work closely with internal teams to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and maintain high-quality productivity levels.

The ideal candidate will have experience in underwriting, insurance, medical, or financial fields, with a solid understanding of reinsurance underwriting guidelines and the ability to develop working knowledge of Company's products and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assess Risk: Review exams, labs, EKGs, and attending physician statements to assess risk using published reinsurance underwriting guidelines.
  • Analyze Third-Party Data: Interpret third-party data, including Medical Information Bureau codes, motor vehicle records, pharmacy checks, medical claim reports, laboratory database reports, inspections reports, financial reports, avocation risks, aviation risks, and foreign travel/national activity.
  • Develop Competency: Develop competency in use of reinsurance manual and working knowledge of Company's products and procedures.
  • Review Cases: Review cases with mentor or department management.
  • Assign Codes: Assist with assigning Medical Information Bureau codes as indicated.
  • Provide Support: Provide ongoing support to both internal and external customers, engaging in communication with field associates, internal staff, and vendors in support of Company mortality, profitability, and sales objectives.
Requirements:
  • 1 Year of Experience: 1 year of related experience is preferred.
  • Underwriting Experience: Experience in underwriting, insurance, medical, or financial fields is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Ability to learn and follow applicable regulations and company procedures.
