Medical Assistant Occupational Health Specialist

Job Summary: MedStar Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to join our Occupational Health team at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.
This position involves performing clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement, and documentation of vital signs, and assistance with patient exams, telephone, and clerical support.
The Medical Assistant will assist with patient preparation for examination, office procedures, examination, and education of patients. They will manage patient volume throughout the workday, provide telephone screening services, and escort patients. The Medical Assistant will also provide chaperoning for patients, fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities, and update records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manage drug and medical supply inventories.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in an ambulatory care/medical office or equivalent. A completed externship program at MedStar Health may be substituted for experience in ambulatory care/medical office. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred. Electronic medical records experience is also preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with patient preparation for examination, office procedures, examination, and education of patients.
- Manage patient volume throughout the workday.
- Provide telephone screening services.
- Escort patients.
- Provide chaperoning for patients.
- Fulfill infection prevention and environmental responsibilities.
- Update records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manage drug and medical supply inventories.
- Conduct motivational interviews, including patient screening, coaching on disease management, motivation to change, learning care needs, and community outreach needs.
- Identify potential behavioral health needs of patients and notify provider of findings.
- Participate in population management activities, including an awareness of the populations served and engaging the patient in self-management support, care/health goal setting, pre-visit planning, and capturing information that leads to health care improvement activities.
- Report actual/potential problems concerning patients, families, and associates.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives to improve care quality and safety.
- Ensure ongoing compliance by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medications are current/unexpired, maintaining emergency equipment, keeping the work area free of clutter, etc.
- Review and prepare for scheduled patient visits.
- Screen all patients for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns, and potential fall risk.
- Conduct surveillance for transitions of care, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing.
- Perform laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, and vision and hearing testing.
- Remove sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order.
- Perform UDS as needed per collection protocol, including proper chain of custody, packaging, and shipping/delivery.
- Under provider supervision, insert intravenous catheter for IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications, insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheter for procedures, and prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular.
- Perform phlebotomy.
- Document activities in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR).
- Document clinically related activities accurately in the patient's EMR; perform required patient follow-up, including pap smears, Pb levels, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), mammograms, and STD's.
- Collect and process specimens, complete requisitions, and document in applicable forms/records.
- Utilize the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval.
- Complete requisitions for tests.
- Contact insurance companies for pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals, including insurance authorization.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience working in an ambulatory care/medical office or equivalent.
- Completed externship program at MedStar Health may be substituted for experience in ambulatory care/medical office.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Electronic medical records experience preferred.
- For Cardiology offices only: 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent.
- OR Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology/Science or related major.
- OR successful completion of a Cardiac Technician course.
