YMCA of Southern Maine: Fitness Specialist

We're seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as a Fitness Specialist at the YMCA of Southern Maine. This is an exciting opportunity to make a positive impact in our community by helping people achieve their health and wellness goals.

About the Role

The Fitness Specialist will work under the supervision of the Wellness Director to build relationships with members and provide exceptional support following safe and effective fitness principles. They will be responsible for delivering a quality experience that meets the diverse needs of health seekers, members, participants, and the community.

Key Responsibilities

  2. Relationship Building: Develop genuine relationships within the Y that promote awareness of our mission and impact. Learn members' needs and interests through effective communication and listening techniques.
  3. Personal Growth: Maintain emotional maturity and interpersonal skills, and commit to personal growth and skill acquisition.
  4. Operations & Safety: Understand different health needs and adjust activities accordingly. Provide proper instruction on equipment use and flexibility exercises, ensuring the Wellness Center is clean and well-maintained.
Requirements
  • Prior experience working in a fitness facility or customer service setting.
  • Completion of a Personal Trainer Certification or Foundations of Strength and Conditioning within 90 days of hire, or a four-year degree in exercise science or a related field.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with non-English speakers.
  • Familiarity with proper exercise equipment, good body mechanics, and healthy exercise practices.
  • Excellent judgment and discretion, with a focus on providing exceptional customer service.
