About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Urban Planning Manager to join our team at the City of Punta Gorda, FL. As a key member of our planning department, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our community through effective urban planning and management.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate planning activities with various stakeholders, including county staff, departments, boards, agencies, and other entities.
  • Develop, review, and make recommendations on future development plans to ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
  • Interpret, develop, and compose regulations and policies that guide development, ensuring consistency with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Manage complex and sensitive professional planning projects, research, and analysis, providing guidance and oversight as needed.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and codes.
  • Oversee specialized planning functions, such as large-scale new development proposals and environmental studies.
  • Provide overall management of division-related planning issues, advising the Urban Design Manager on all planning-related matters.
  • Advise various councils, boards, commissions, and elected officials on planning-related issues, providing expert guidance and recommendations.
  • Assign work to professional staff, ensuring appropriate training is provided and operations are evaluated regularly.
  • Evaluate operations and activities of assigned responsibilities, preparing reports on improvements and modifications.
  • Handle sensitive personnel matters, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Attend substantial evening and weekend meetings, representing the City's interests and engaging with stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials in developing neighborhood plans, coordinating and participating in review and approval processes.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of neighborhood improvement projects, including program and project design, contract writing, and administration.
  • Prepare technical studies and reports, making presentations to the City Council, CRA, Planning Commission, Committee, Development Review Committee, and Historic Preservation Advisory Board.
  • Perform coordinating functions with local, regional, state, and federal entities where their interests overlap with the City's economic development interests and comprehensive plan.
  • Research pictorial and sketch documentation of best practices in site and architectural design, assisting citizens, property owners, developers, engineers, architects, and landscape architects in understanding land development regulations.
  • Write and present formal and technical reports, working papers, and correspondence, communicating effectively with various audiences.
  • Provide information and technical guidance to the public regarding land development regulations, land uses, zoning classifications, variances, special exceptions, and related issues, receiving and responding to inquiries from engineers, contractors, other County departments, and the general public.
  • Research and analyze information, making recommendations that enable staff and elected officials to make informed decisions on applications and planning activities.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning, architecture, public policy, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Ten (10) years' experience in urban design/urban planning or practical experience may be substituted for education or as approved by the Urban Design Manager.
  • AICP Certification required.
  • Valid Florida driver's license required.
  • Supervisory experience is required.

Salary Range:$67,496 - $107,993 annually, based on qualifications and experience.
