Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our dynamic team at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will play a crucial role in providing exceptional respiratory and pulmonary care to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer respiratory and pulmonary treatments and therapies according to established departmental policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate and assess patient needs, perform arterial blood gas punctures and analysis, and ensure that treatments are delivered within the timeframes specified in our policies.
  • Administer aerosol and IPPB therapy to effectively deliver medication and aid bronchial hygiene.
  • Perform chest physiotherapy, including chest percussion and vibration to loosen retained secretions and postural drainage to utilize gravity for removal of secretions.
  • Measure pulmonary mechanics to determine patient's lung function.
  • Assemble and deliver necessary equipment for oxygen transport to patient and escort patient if needed.
  • Initiate transcutaneous CO2 monitor and evaluate patient status during monitoring.
  • Perform EKG's in the absence of the Cardiology technician.
  • Respond to all Harvey Teams and provide respiratory support, including airway management of the patient and arterial blood gas analysis.
  • Initiate and instruct patient on use of Incentive spirometer, and periodically evaluate his progress.
  • Initiate, manage, and maintain mechanical ventilation upon physician's request while monitoring the patient's pulmonary status.
  • Perform arterial blood gas punctures and analysis, collect arterial blood gas specimen using aseptic technique in accordance with departmental policies and procedures, and introduce specimen into the instrument for analysis ensuring proper technique to prevent air bubbles and clots.
  • Report results to physician and nurse in a timely manner.
  • Perform patient evaluations and assessments, perform pre and postoperative consults to evaluate patient lung function and make recommendations for therapy, and monitor and evaluate patient's respiratory status during special procedures.
  • Inform physician of results of evaluation within timeframe specified in policies.
  • Provide in-service education for patients, relatives, nurses, physicians, and department personnel.
  • Prepare and maintain proper patient and departmental documentation, document equipment usage and treatments on departmental records in accordance with department policies and procedures, and document equipment usage and treatments on the Respiratory Care record in the patient record.
  • Complete charges on a daily basis for submission to supervisor.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies, adhere to Infection Control policies and procedures, perform quality control according to department guidelines, perform routine maintenance procedures on all equipment according to set guidelines, examine inventory and notify supervisor of equipment and supply needs, and notify supervisor of equipment repair needs.
  • Operate the Laboratory Information System computer, enter all blood gas orders into the computer and record the accession number, and enter results of all blood gases into the computer then verify those results.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Respiratory Care and successful completion of requirements established by the National Board for Respiratory Care required.
  • One (1) year of respiratory care experience required.
  • Experience within a pediatric critical care setting preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with ABG endorsement from the Tennessee State Board of Respiratory Care required.

This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $45.50 per hour for the role of Respiratory Therapist.
