Meat Safety Specialist: Enforcing Food Safety and Animal Health

About the Role:

As a Meat Safety Veterinarian with the Department of State Health Services, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of meat products for Texans. This position requires expertise in animal disease presentations, sampling procedures, and food safety regulations.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Food Safety Assessments: Conduct thorough assessments of meat establishments to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. Identify potential sanitation deficiencies and disease conditions in livestock.
  • Livestock Dispositions: Conduct veterinary dispositions of suspect animals, carcasses, and parts, including antemortem and postmortem evaluations.
  • Training and Education: Provide training for inspection staff on advanced food safety concepts, animal anatomy, and other inspection tasks.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that meat establishments comply with state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, including the Texas Meat and Poultry Inspection Act.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree: Graduation from an accredited veterinary school is required.
  • Regulatory Public Health Experience: Previous experience in a state or federal meat and poultry inspection program is highly preferred.
  • Certification: Certification in Inspection Methods (IM), Enforcement Investigation and Analysis Officer (EIAO) course, or equivalent is preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary range of $75,000 - $110,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
