Job SummaryThe Histology Specialist prepares tissue specimens for routine and special processing in the histology laboratory, following established best practices. Key responsibilities include selecting the correct protocol based on physician orders, preparing thin slices of human tissue on slides for analysis, and staining or dying samples to emphasize abnormalities.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, effective communication abilities, and the ability to work collaboratively with personnel within the laboratory and across the health system.
Responsibilities- Prepare tissue specimens for routine and special processing, adhering to established protocols
- Select the correct protocol based on physician orders, ensuring accurate and timely specimen preparation
- Prepare thin slices of human tissue on slides for analysis, including embedding, cutting, and mounting
- Stain or dye samples to emphasize abnormalities, utilizing various techniques and materials
- Assist pathologists by preparing additional slides or stains as requested
- Maintain inventory levels, file slides and blocks, and retrieve same as needed
- Perform frozen section processing for Mohs micrographic surgery, adapting technique based on tissue type
- Train and supervise students and new employees, documenting training and competency assessments
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills, communicating effectively with personnel throughout the health system
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess a High School Diploma and have 2 years of experience preferred. An Associate degree is preferred, and completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnology program is also preferred.
Estimated Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per year-
