Asphalt Laborer

Asphalt Laborers play a crucial role in the construction and maintenance of roads and highways. They work with hot mix asphalt, utilizing various tools and equipment to ensure a smooth and durable surface.

• Identify and address asphalt surface areas requiring attention.
• Manipulate asphalt using hand tools, such as the Asphalt Lute and Shovel, to achieve a smooth surface.
• Act as a Spotter for dump trucks and other heavy equipment, utilizing visual, verbal, and hand communication.
• Operate small equipment, such as broom tractors, skid steers, rollers, chop saws, grinders, and walk-behind saws.
• Perform tasks such as shoveling, sweeping, and using a wheelbarrow.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Driver's license (preferred).
• Ability to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.

• Constant ability to walk at a slow pace on various walking surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, dirt, and stone.
• Frequent ability to stoop, bend, and crouch.
• Frequent physical dexterity to use hand tools, such as hand shovels and asphalt lutes, involving pushing/pulling and lifting up to 25 lbs.
• Ability to use steps and handle/grab bars to access and egress heavy mobile equipment.
• Frequent vision abilities required, including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Frequent ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds, such as moving equipment, backing alarms, or other alarms, instructions/directions from supervisors and/or spotters.

• Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions, typically excluding below-freezing temperatures.
• Work environment periodically exposes employees to high levels of noise, commonly found in road construction.
• Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found in road construction or near equipment, such as grease, diesel fuel, gasoline, and asphalt.
• Employee regularly works near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and near traffic.
