Job Summary

At the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, we are seeking a skilled Instrumentation Calibration Technician to join our team. As a key member of our Operations and Maintenance Department, you will be responsible for the repair, fabrication, modification, maintenance, installation, and testing of a wide range of electronic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical instruments used in research and industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Check schematic diagrams and equipment manuals to isolate causes of instrument malfunctions
  • Check electronic alignment of instruments according to calibrating standards using electronic testing equipment
  • Disassemble and replace components such as vacuum tubes, thermocouples, transistors, etc.
  • Redesign existing circuits to meet special requirements
  • Modify equipment for miniaturization and efficiency of operation
  • Periodically inspect instruments and support systems
  • Conduct standard tests on newly installed support systems
  • Assist in maintaining reserve essential components
  • Occasionally work beyond normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Operations and Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Perform troubleshooting on low voltage controls

Requirements
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of five (5) years of craft-related experience, including one (1) year of vocational or manufacturers' instruction in electronic industrial instrumentation and pneumatic controls
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 40-50 lbs.; climb stairs and ladders; work involves bending, stooping, and working in confined areas; potential exposure to particulates, vapors, or noisy environments
  • Ability to read prints, diagrams, schematics, programs, and operating instructions
  • This position is considered a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a wide range of installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial electrical equipment and systems
  • Knowledge of electrical components of scientific/laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of National Electrical Codes, National Electrical Safety Codes; basic principles and theories of electricity; safety practices in the electrical trade
  • Experience with voltmeters, ammeters, wattmeters, and other multi-amp testing equipment
  • Experience replacing bearings, brushes, rings, contacts, and armatures of electric motors in scientific equipment
  • Experience in CMMS BM RAM
  • Experience with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition)
  • Experience with REES Scientific alarm systems
  • Experience working in a GMP facility
  • Experience with PLC (Allen Bradley) and/or computer-controlled production equipment is advantageous
