About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Journeyman Mechanic to join our team at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. As a key member of our Mechanical Trades department, you will be responsible for performing service, repair, and installation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and steam utility systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide on-the-job training for other mechanics while performing service, repair, and installation of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Service and repair sensors and controls installed in buildings to operate Building Energy Management Systems.
  • Repair, replace, and conduct new installation of electrical services and building/system wiring meeting current building codes and safety standards.
  • Perform preventative maintenance scheduled tasks for all types of mechanical and electrical equipment ensuring safe and proper operations.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and policies, identifying and communicating effectively any safety issues related to mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.
  • Participate in on-the-job training from experienced mechanics.
  • Oversee and assist contractor work to ensure all work is performed in a safe and appropriate manner to protect Colonial Williamsburg's assets and properties.
  • Work directly with contractors to complete required tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • May provide on-call coverage 24 hours a day.
  • This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends, or shift work as required by the Foreman, Mechanical Trades.
  • This position is deemed essential personnel and is required to report regardless of the emergency, weather-related, or otherwise.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, plus application of mechanical and electrical skills related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and controls.
  • Ability to read and explain mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans, shop drawings, catalogue cuts, and similar material that support quality performance of work assignments.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate required. Completion of a minimum of 4 years' experience in the application of HVAC and control, or a minimum of 4 years' experience directly related to the preservation of historic buildings, restaurant facilities, repair, and operation of mechanical systems in hospitals, museums, building serviced by computer-controlled systems, or other temperature and humidity-controlled environments.
  • Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license and have an acceptable driving record based on The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's criteria.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds, ability to work at heights above 30 feet on ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to work and shift, including nights, weekends, holiday, and emergency calls.
  • All licensed mechanics must maintain current/valid Virginia State Licenses meeting all required and periodic renewals.
  • The following licenses are inclusive: Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC Mechanical, Gasfitter-Natural/LP, and Back Flow Certification.
