Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Veterinarian Specialist at the State Detention Barn in Tampa, Florida. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to work with thoroughbred racehorses and other large animals.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting specimen samples from racing animals, observing their overall health, and making recommendations to the Stewards regarding the scratching of unsound or unfit horses. The Veterinarian Specialist will also be required to work closely with the detention barn supervisor and staff, and report directly to the Regional Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

* Collect specimen samples from racing animals following strict chain-of-custody procedures
* Observe the overall health of horses and make recommendations to the Stewards regarding their fitness to race
* Work closely with the detention barn supervisor and staff to ensure the smooth operation of the barn
* Report directly to the Regional Supervisor on a regular basis

Requirements

We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Veterinarian with a current State of Florida license in veterinary medicine. The ideal candidate will have experience working with thoroughbred racehorses, other breeds of horses, or other large animals. A strong understanding of the Florida regulated thoroughbred industry and the ability to work efficiently under stressful conditions are essential.

Benefits

This is an Other Personal Services (OPS) position, which means you will not accrue leave or paid holidays. However, OPS employees are required to participate in the Florida FICA Alternative Plan, which provides an excellent opportunity to accumulate money for a secure retirement. You will also be required to participate in direct deposit and undergo a security background check. Successful completion of L2 background screening will be required for this position.

Working Conditions

The Veterinarian Specialist will work in a barn environment, which may involve walking on various surfaces, such as dirt and shavings/straw, for several hours. The role may also require working in inclement weather conditions. You will be required to work afternoons and evenings, including weekends and holidays, as needed. You must be comfortable working in a barn environment and able to adapt to changes in the work environment.

Salary

The estimated salary for this position is $45.00 per hour, based on the location and job requirements. This is a part-time position, working approximately 30 hours per week during the racing season.
