Director of Education Job Description

The California Academy of Sciences is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Education to lead our Education Division. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing engaging educational programs for children and youth, promoting a lifelong passion for science and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Development: Design, implement, and evaluate educational programs and curriculum materials that align with science standards and incorporate the museum's exhibits and resources.
  • Content Creation: Direct the expansion and maintenance of the Educators section of the Academy website, including online resources, videos, lesson plans, and interactives.
  • Collaboration: Enable synergies with teams within the Teacher, Youth, and Student Engagement business unit to ensure resources are leveraged across in-school and out-of-school settings.
  • People Leadership: Lead, mentor, and support a team of approximately 20 people, including managers of signature programs, program staff, paid interns, fellows, and non-paid seasonal volunteers.
  • Budget Management: Oversee the youth education budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources to maximize program impact and reach.

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Education, with emphasis in Sustainability or Science Education preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years classroom teaching experience and/or administrative or supervisory experience in an out-of-school time setting, or informal learning organization that emphasizes science and sustainability-focused teaching lessons and units.
  • Skills: Strong attention to detail, organization, and effective written and verbal communication skills tailored to the unique needs of diverse audiences.
