Job Summary

As a key member of our team at California Retina Consultants, we are seeking a highly skilled Ophthalmic Scribe Specialist to join our Ophthalmic Clinic. The successful candidate will work closely with our industry-leading physicians, assisting with patient exams and emergency procedures. Responsibilities

• Accurately summarize and document physician verbalizations during examinations, including charting, documenting additions to the chief complaint, and recommendations for treatment.
• Maintain accurate ICD10 and CPT coding in patient charts.
• Observe patients and physicians, assisting when necessary during exams, including providing assistance to patients, providing medications and instruments, and following directions in medical emergencies.
• Maintain awareness of patient verbal and non-verbal communication, repeating information, providing written instructions, and handing out patient education materials as needed.
• Clean and prepare exam rooms before each clinic session, adhering to physician preferences for drops, medications, instruments, forms, and educational materials.
• Perform OCT, OCT-A, Fundus Photography, and Microperimetry, and possess basic knowledge and skills to perform B-Scans when necessary.
• Utilize practice management systems, including scheduling new and existing patients, viewing scheduled appointments and insurance information, and printing fee tickets and patient demographics.
• Ensure patient understanding of instructions and accurately document amendments to patient charts according to practice protocols.
• Maintain patient flow, confirming insurance authorization prior to treatment, and providing support to the clinic by executing Ophthalmic Technician duties as needed.
• Alert physicians to patient-related forms that need completion and guide patients to the front desk after exam completion, ensuring proper follow-up appointments are communicated.
• Understand and utilize drug inventory systems, including dispensing and removing medications, performing end-of-day drug inventory counts, and running basic reports.
• Evaluate examination room conditions to ensure patient safety and notify physicians of changes to the daily schedule, especially emergencies.
• Facilitate communication between physicians and staff members to minimize clinic flow disruptions and perform on-call duties with assigned physicians after hours and on weekends.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• 2 years of medical scribe experience.
• Experience in Ophthalmology.
• Computer proficiency and effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to travel to nearby clinics for occasional support.
