Job Summary
As a Phlebotomy Technician at Prisma Health, you will play a vital role in collecting specimens from patients and ensuring their safety and comfort. You will access samples into the computer system for accurate testing and billing, and obtain signed documents as needed. Your responsibilities will also include reviewing outstanding workload reports, performing Point of Care testing, and sample processing if assigned.Key Accountabilities
- Utilize correct technique, policy, and protocol in the collection and processing of all specimens, verifying patient and specimen identification, and properly labeling specimens with required information.
- Input and assess information via the hospital and laboratory computer systems accurately and timely, reviewing collection lists, unreceived lists, tracking logs, and telephone logs for completion of work, and taking appropriate action as needed.
- Follow safety procedures and respond correctly and immediately to safety violations and safety drills, reporting and documenting personal exposure to hazardous or infectious situations, and using available PPE and safety equipment when needed.
- Process specimens for testing, including identifying, sorting, aliquoting, centrifuging, and labeling specimens appropriately, and ensuring proper storage and retention of all specimens for their designated time.
- Restock items in use, maintaining work area cleanliness and orderliness, monitoring expiration dates of all supplies and reagents, and following established protocol.
- Communicate with patients and guests in a timely and courteous manner, using positive interpersonal skills in all patient/customer interactions, and receiving incoming calls, documenting incoming requests for blood collection or other information, and coordinating collections as needed.
- Perform account registrations and orders tests in multiple laboratory systems in a timely manner, collecting appropriate consents for preauthorizations and Advanced Beneficiary Notice as required, and completing clerical duties such as scanning of all relative patient data and tracking monthly workload performance.
- Perform POC testing accurately if assigned, using established protocol and QC, and notifying appropriate caregivers of critical values.
- Instruct new employees and students in procedure, technique, and theory as assigned, and document proficiency on checklist, and inform appropriate persons of problems noted in an individual's training process.
- Complete all required 6-month and annual competencies in the required time frame with documentation in personnel files, and participate in Continuing Education (CE) program annually.

High School Diploma or equivalent, and 3-month training in phlebotomy certification.
In Lieu Of
In lieu of the education and experience requirements noted above, previous phlebotomy experience or training in formal programs which include phlebotomy are qualified as candidates.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of general phlebotomy equipment, interpersonal and communication skills, previous experience if no formal training, basic computer skills, knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier), and proficient computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, database).
