Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated Social Service Specialist to join our team at the Oregon Department of Human Services. As a Social Service Specialist, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and permanency of children in need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safety and Well-being: Conduct assessments and interviews to determine the safety and well-being of children, and develop strategies to address areas of concern.
  • Engagement: Engage with children, families, resource parents, and caregivers to promote safety, permanency, and optimal outcomes for Oregon's children and families.
  • Assessment and Interviews: Conduct thorough assessments and interviews to determine the needs of children and families, and develop plans to address those needs.
  • Strategies: Develop and implement multi-level strategies to leverage family strengths and address areas for improvement.
  • Decision-Making: Analyze collected information to determine appropriate child placement, considering each family's unique circumstances.
  • Communication: Create reports, case notes, and testify in court, communicating with diverse populations in various settings.
  • Application Review and Home Studies: Review applications, interview applicants, and conduct home studies to assess an applicant's ability to care for special needs children and youth.
Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in human services or a related field, or a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with one year of human services experience or completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency.
  • An associate degree with two years of human services experience or one year of experience and related training, coursework, or certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency.
Essential Attributes
  • Community Engagement: Experience building collaborative relationships with community partners, agency staff, clients, and impacted communities.
  • Trauma-Informed Practices: Experience adopting trauma-informed practices that consider individual needs, safety, trust-building, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in navigating technology, inputting, and retrieving data, and using various computer systems or databases, including Microsoft 365 programs.
  • Social Service Experience: Experience providing services and resources to children and families in social services settings.
  • Written Communication: Proficiency in writing detailed reports, including conclusions and recommended actions, with minimal spelling or grammar issues.
