Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist I Per Diem to join our team at Brigham and Women's Hospital. As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for collecting blood samples from patients in a safe and efficient manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood samples from patients using aseptic techniques and following established protocols.
  • Validate patient identification and confirm accuracy of labels and requisitions before beginning the procedure.
  • Develop a relationship with patients to make them feel comfortable and cared for during the blood collection process.
  • Accurately complete laboratory requisitions or electronic orders, including documentation of phlebotomy code, research billing information, and collection date and time.
  • Follow all requirements for sample processing per study protocol.
  • Perform venipuncture and select the best area available for blood drawing.
  • Follow all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture procedure.
  • Discard all equipment (sharps, gloves, etc.) as required and hand-wash between patients.
  • Complete phlebotomy check sheets and/or logbooks as required.
  • Provide professional customer service skills and interact effectively with patients, patients' families, and clinical staff.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification required.
  • Certified in obtaining vital signs.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
  • Basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of veins.
  • Knowledge to select appropriate tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.
  • Ability to communicate with patients, patients' families, and extended families to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.
