Health Information Specialist with Clinical Acuity

We are seeking a skilled Health Information Specialist to join our team at Denver Health, a leading academic health care system in Colorado.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in health information management and a passion for delivering exceptional patient care in high-acuity environments.

Job Summary:

As a Health Information Specialist, you will be responsible for releasing and copying medical records for outside agencies, patients, courts, and other entities, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws for legal release of health information.

You will also be responsible for auditing medical records to ensure completeness and legibility, pulling medical charts to prepare clinical lines, filing loose paperwork daily, and maintaining the four-part chart accurately.

The successful candidate will provide administrative assistance to the Denver Sheriff Health Services Unit, maintaining a high level of confidentiality and a professional relationship with Denver Sheriff Health Service staff and Denver Health.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Health Information Requests: Process health information requests on a daily basis, including preparing medical records for various departments, working with other facilities for exchange of health information, and releasing health information from Internal Affairs, Adult Probation, Social Security Administration, State Hospital, and other entities.
  • Auditing and Document Review: Perform audits, purge shelves when charts exceed capacity, review each document for accuracy, detect and correct chart misfiles, and analyze health records for deficiencies as defined by state and federal HIM record requirements.
  • Transferring Records: Ensure proper protocols for patient transfers are followed for continuum of care, coordinate with Health Services Staff and Denver Sheriff's Department to ensure proper documentation on each transfer.
  • Customer Service: Provide customer-friendly assistance to patients, outside health care providers, and other customers requesting medical records via various request methods.

Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Work Experience: 1-3 years of clerical experience, with a combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interact well with customers.
  • Self-motivated, multitasker, detailed-oriented.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of terminal-digit filling systems sufficient to maintain records.
  • Knowledge of release of information.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and applicability in complying with State and Federal regulations, HIPAA, Denver Sheriff Department, NCCHC, and ACA regarding release of information and privacy of patient records.
