Certified Phlebotomist Specialist

Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist I role at Intermountain Health involves accurately collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional medical environment. This position functions as part of a dynamic team with a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings to high/low volume clinics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) according to established procedures, identifying patients using two patient identifiers and labeling specimens and specimen containers accurately.
- Determine the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc. specimen collections and collect and receive specimens into the laboratory utilizing computer protocols.
- Ensure the timely transport and processing of all patient specimens for testing, filing patients lab reports, requisitions charges for the business office, and sending reports to outside hospitals and clinics.
- Investigate complex bills, research and resolve any questionable patient orders, enter patient demographic data accurately, and maintain required lab records and logs.
- Perform complex specimen set-up, enter complex orders and results, pack and ship infectious materials, and communicate any special situations related to specimens or testing with all appropriate staff and management.
- Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, record daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas, and order supplies and maintain sufficient inventory to efficiently operate phlebotomy services.
- Assist in the training of new associates and students, act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory, and perform patient registration and test ordering and specimen processing as appropriate.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- A certification from one of the following is required: RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician), AMT PBT (Phlebotomy Technician), ASCP American Sociaety of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), National Association of Phlebotomy Technicians (NAPT), National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Nationa Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals (ACA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), National Healthcare Certification Association (NHCO).
- Preferred: Six (6) months of laboratory experience.
Physical Requirements:
Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others requiring the employee to verbally communicate information, as well as understand spoken information. Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy requiring the ability to move fingers and hands. See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents. Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart. Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work. Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
