Job Summary

The Medical Oncology Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care on the inpatient medical oncology unit, working collaboratively with attending physicians and other medical professionals to collect and document data, obtain and order diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies, and professional consultations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform thorough physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post-treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, and treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgment, including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress, maintaining detailed and accurate health records.
  • Participate in clinical research projects and understand the importance of documentation of toxicities and data collection.
  • Communicate effectively among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborate, support, and build strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students, and other learners.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Attend program-required meetings.
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics, and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
  • Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.
Requirements
  • Education:
    • NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care.
    • PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program.
  • Certification:
    • NP: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.).
    • PA: PA-C.
  • Licensure:
    • NP: Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP.
    • PA: Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA.
  • Experience:
    • APP experience is preferred, ideally Oncology related, but recent or new APP grads graduating by August 2024 are welcome to apply.

  • The desire and willingness to continue to learn.
Job Hours

Monday through Sunday, including weekends and holidays, 12-hour day shift, 7A-7P, 13 shifts per 28 days.
