Job Summary:The Phlebotomy Specialist is responsible for collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional medical environment. This role functions as part of a dynamic team with a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings and high/low volume clinics. Caregivers in this position will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare them for workplace and career advancement.
Key Responsibilities:
Collect patient specimens using various techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections. Communicate procedures and instructions with patients and family members, demonstrating empathy during every interaction. Participate in CODE response teams, train and mentor new staff, and contribute to specimen processing and special projects. Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to laboratory compliance and safety regulations.
Requirements:
Basic Life Support certification (BLS)/RQI for healthcare providers. Ability to take on-call shifts, according to department needs. Must be flexible to work in other facilities, as needed. Adheres to all personal protective requirements in inpatient and/or outpatient settings. Preferred qualifications include six months of phlebotomy experience or phlebotomy training as approved by Manager/Supervisor. High School diploma or equivalent in compliance with CLIA regulations. Certificate of completion from phlebotomy school or program. Willingness to work in a team environment under stressful situations. Self-motivated and able to work independently. Basic computer skills.
Physical Requirements:
Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others requiring the ability to verbally communicate information and understand spoken information. Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy. See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents. Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart. Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work. Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
