West Hartford Public Schools is seeking a skilled Heating and Ventilation Systems Specialist to join our Plant and Facilities Services team. As a vital member of our staff, you will play a key role in maintaining the comfort and safety of our students and faculty.

Job Summary

This 12-month position involves working as a full-time HVAC II technician, responsible for performing routine maintenance, repairs, and installations of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in school buildings and related facilities.

You will work closely with our HVAC Foreman and Manager of Maintenance Services to ensure that all work is completed efficiently and effectively. Occasional supervision may be required for one or more helpers, but normal repairs can be completed independently without close review.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in school buildings and related facilities.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning and inspecting equipment, to ensure optimal performance.
  • Install new HVAC equipment and fixtures, including a variety of pipes, ducts, and controls.
  • Calibrate and adjust pneumatic and direct digital control equipment to optimize system performance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair existing equipment, using a range of diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Work safely and effectively in confined spaces, using personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other members of the facilities team to ensure that all work is completed efficiently and effectively.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A standard high school diploma or trade school certificate, combined with 3 years' experience as a journeyman HVAC mechanic or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • S-2 Unlimited Journeyperson license for HVAC work.
  • S-1 Unlimited Contractor license for HVAC work and refrigerant handling certification (EPA Technician Certification 08 - Universal), highly preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, terminology, and best practices of the HVAC trade.
  • Ability to make time and material estimates for repairs and projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
Salary and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is $69,000, plus an additional $1.78 per hour night shift differential. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings plan, and paid time off.
