Tax Manager, State Compliance Specialist

Job Summary:
The State Tax Return Filing and Audit Lead will be responsible for managing all aspects of CF Industries' state tax return filings and state and local audits. This role will also assist with the company's state income tax provision and provide tax law analysis and planning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise all aspects of state tax compliance, including quarterly and annual state income tax provision reporting.
- Lead the company's response to all state tax examinations, including management of audits and responding to information document requests.
- Review state apportionment data for both the year-end tax provision and the filing of state tax returns.
- Monitor and analyze tax regulatory and compliance developments and tax law changes, and communicate their impact to the Tax Department.
- Maintain state statute of limitations charts and update quarterly state FAS 5 and FIN 48 memos.
- Work with the tax accounting team to align tax financial reporting with the compliance process.
- Participate in organization-wide system initiatives to ensure tax requirements are considered.
- Support the company's position during financial audits.
- Assist Tax Directors with analysis of risks and sustainability of various tax positions taken in the tax filings and financial statements.
- Oversee the implementation and maintenance of tax compliance software.
- Participate in the company's pursuit of incentives related to potential expansions of existing facilities and the development of new facilities.
- Write state tax technical memoranda and perform ad-hoc research as needed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting required, with preference for a graduate tax degree (MST, MBA or LLM) and/or JD.
- Professional certification (e.g., Certified Public Accountant and/or IPT-CMI designation) is desirable.
- At least seven years of state tax experience with a large corporate organization or public accounting firm.
- At least two years of experience in a supervisory role.
- Strong critical and analytical thinking skills and the ability to identify issues and develop and implement practical solutions.
- Experience and familiarity with ERP systems.
- Strong knowledge of Thomson Reuters OneSource Income Tax is preferred.
- Strong communication (oral and written), interpersonal and negotiation skills and the ability to act as an advocate for the company, when necessary, and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people within and outside CF.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple projects in a deadline-oriented environment.
