Job Overview

Southern Utah University seeks a highly skilled Electrics Director - Technical Operations Manager to oversee the entertainment networks for lighting, audio, and video, as well as maintain and update equipment. This role involves managing systems and personnel, supporting production teams, and implementing standards and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Act as liaison for outside users of USF electrics department equipment, providing technical support.
    • Coordinate with other production departments on build schedules and production needs.
    • Attend all production, department, and staff meetings, as well as technical rehearsals as needed.
  • Technical Operations
    • Responsible for timely execution of network and video needs for productions, working with video designers to realize each design.
    • Serve as video supervisor when required for USF productions.
    • Provide technical support for USF electrics-related equipment and systems.
    • Administer check-in and check-out of electrics' equipment to 3rd party users.
  • Staff Supervision and Training
    • Develop staff skills and efficiency, serving in training, supervisory, and mentor roles in sound and video technology areas.
    • Plan and supervise efficient and safe installation, operation, and dismantling of lighting, video, and audio equipment and systems during load-in, technical, and dress rehearsals, previews, performances, and load-outs of all productions.
    • Ensure all staff working in the electrics department use tools and materials safely, and use appropriate protection equipment. Provide training if necessary.
  • Maintenance, Repair, and Upgrade
    • Includes inventory, project tracking, improvements, maintenance schedules, safety, and security of equipment.
    • Maintain all files including equipment and supply inventories in Snipe-IT or similar databases, system configuration in audio and video processors or similar equipment, software licenses for audio and video, software updates in audio and video, and video project tracking.
    • Participate in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of video, audio, and lighting equipment, infrastructure, and networks.
    • Repair and maintain all IP stage communications systems; sound equipment, audio/video monitoring, and paging systems.
    • Assist with electrics department projects and special assignments when required.
    • Coordinate research and development on materials and mechanics needed for productions.
    • Maintain familiarity with industry-standard technology. Research and recommend upgrades and capital acquisitions where appropriate.
  • Education and Experience Requirements
    • B.A./B.S or BFA in Theatre Technology with an emphasis in audio engineering/sound design and/or at least three years professional practical experience or a minimum of five or more years professional practical experience in live theatre and/or IT services.
    • Practical knowledge in basic electronics and comprehensive understanding of digital audio, audio, and video over Ethernet required.
    • Practical experience with repair and maintenance of amplifiers, loudspeakers, analog, and digital consoles, DAW and playback software/computers, cable, and theatrical audio systems and equipment.
    • Must have experience with Ethernet topology.
    • Must have working knowledge and be able to program Yamaha audio consoles, DSP, and Symetrix DSP and familiarity with equipment and operating systems currently in place.
    • Possess Audinate and Symetrix certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of taking position with support from USF.
    • Candidates must have knowledge and experience in the specific requirements and conventions of theatrical productions, including standard rigging practices, production communication systems, and digital editing and recording systems.
    • Must have proven experience in live mixing and reinforcement of both plays and musicals.
    • Must have video production experience, including edge blending, projector stacking, and telnet protocol.
    • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Dante Controller, VectorWorks or AutoCad, Logic, QLab, Reaper, Isadora.
    • Excellent time and resource management skills.
    • Must have the ability to multi-task, work under deadlines, and prioritize tasks.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills essential.
    • Excellent supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills required.
    • Physically capable of handling job requirements, including climbing ladders to a 60' height and lifting up to 50 pounds.
    • Possess electrical troubleshooting skills.
