Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Laborer to join our team at Nielson Construction & Materials, a CRH Company. As a Laborer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the successful completion of various construction projects. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting highway, utility, and grade crews with manual tasks, operating equipment, and maintaining a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Highway Laborer:
    • Prepare ground surfaces for road building by removing debris and leveling the area.
    • Operate ground compactors, rakes, and string markers to ensure a smooth surface.
    • Set up fencing, barricades, and safety cones to block off the work area.
    • Prepare manhole covers, openings, and water lines for paving.
    • Walk behind paver machines to shovel and rake asphalt.
    • Clean asphalt off tools and equipment after each work day.
    • Assist with operating equipment, such as pavers, rollers, backhoes, and water trucks.
  • Utility Laborer:
    • Hand shovel to prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
    • Attach trench boxes and pipes to chains or guide wires for heavy equipment operators.
    • Install shoring materials and guide pipes into place.
    • Connect pipes using tools, lubricants, glue, grout, and other materials.
  • Grade Laborer:
    • Hand shovel and rake to perform groundwork.
    • Cut concrete with saws as needed to finish grades.
    • Remove and replace sewer, manhole, and sump castings and covers.
    • Assist the Grader with grading tasks.
  • Crusher Laborer:
    • Perform machinery maintenance and repairs, including unplugging and shoveling off conveyors and screens.
    • Set up and take down crusher machinery, including running cables and hoses.
    • Keep the crusher machinery area clean and shovel aggregate.
    • Operate equipment, such as skidsteers and loaders.
  • Plant Laborer:
    • Participate in daily THINK/TRACK meetings and weekly safety meetings.
    • Assist in plant production and ensure efficient working conditions.
    • Stockpile materials and feed hot plant from stockpiles.
    • Ensure all assigned equipment is properly maintained and operated.
    • Prepare the plant for operations at the beginning of the season and perform shut-down procedures at the end of the season.
    • Operate front-end loaders, skidsteers, end dump trucks, and other heavy equipment.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Previous related experience in the construction field is a plus.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write correspondences and memos.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work well with others in a group or one-on-one setting.
  • Knowledge of Inventory and Order processing systems.
  • Valid driver's license.
