About the Role

The Legal Aid Society is seeking a highly skilled Community Service Advocate to join our team in the Bronx. As a key member of our criminal defense practice, you will play a critical role in providing comprehensive services to clients who are primarily dually diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders.

As a Community Service Advocate, you will work closely with our MICA attorney and Mitigation Specialist to provide biopsychosocial assessments, treatment and reentry planning, referrals, in-court advocacy, case management services, and crisis counseling to clients.

You will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining relationships with treatment providers and government entities, as well as staying up-to-date on current trends and best practices in areas of mental health and substance use.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview clients and complete psychosocial and risk assessments using validated instruments.
  • Provide crisis intervention, brief treatment, or short-term counseling services to individuals being monitored in mental health court.
  • Identify and interview collateral sources of information, including family members, friends, teachers, social workers, community members, and others connected to the client.
  • Request, review, and analyze life history records to document specific arguments within written reports.
  • Develop casework plans in conjunction with the MICA, Mental Health, and staff attorneys to develop alternative sentencing plans, provide advocacy in the courtroom, and assess client readiness for treatment.
  • Make referrals to substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, shelters, and other relevant services.
  • Provide re-entry planning and assistance, as well as testify in court when necessary.
  • Gather and analyze data to evaluate the impact of social work services on our client population.
  • Conduct training for LAS staff, social work interns, treatment providers, and criminal justice personnel.
Requirements
  • An MSW degree and New York State (NYS) certification in social work (LMSW or LCSW) required.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working with clients with special needs, such as mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Strong assessment skills and ability to interface with Judges, District Attorneys, and Correctional Personnel.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and proficient in using Microsoft 365.
What We Offer

The Legal Aid Society offers a competitive salary range of $81,195 - $120,690, depending on qualifications, as well as a generous benefits package, including health insurance, paid vacation, disability, and life insurance.

We are a qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and offer assistance with loan repayments for New York residents.
