About the Role

This full-time position is located at a client site in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, and involves working Sunday 9am-5pm and Monday through Thursday 8:30am-5pm. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing venipuncture collections and specimen processing, as well as order entry, verification of test result receipt, and patient information retrieval.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age-related standards and departmental policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates the AIDET model and optimizes patient safety to reduce the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Receives and reviews physician orders, ensuring all necessary information is included for appropriate lab services, and enters accurate orders in accordance with department policies, protocols, and procedures.
  • Provides post-phlebotomy patient care using the patient communication model.
  • Processes specimens in a timely manner to ensure stability and integrity of samples, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport in accordance with established protocols and policies.
  • Reviews and records refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records, reporting any areas of concern to the supervisor or manager.
  • Understands the operation and maintenance of equipment pertinent to the job, follows up on outstanding orders on the manifest log, and communicates all timed, completed, or uncompleted draws/charges/results as appropriate.
  • Maintains a safe work environment, adheres to biohazard waste procedures, and ensures proper storage and timely pickup of biohazardous waste.
  • Performs lab-related clerical duties, including order entry, verification of test result receipt, patient information retrieval, and utilization of email, medical record systems, handheld, and desktop devices.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution, or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting or CMA certification.
