Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection control practices. This role also involves preparing surgical case carts in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, as well as MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures, and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand and apply principles of cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and sterile storage.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of basic and special instrumentation.
  • Properly care for and handle instrumentation.
  • Perform all functions related to the decontamination process, including decontaminating various types of instrumentation.
  • Assemble trays accurately by following count sheets.
  • Package and label items for sterilization correctly.
  • Operate sterilizers and other equipment properly.
  • Verify and document sterilizing processes accurately.
  • Run biological and chemical tests, interpret results, and record them in logs.
  • Store sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment in designated locations.
  • Inspect and clean sterilizers according to manufacturers' recommendations, reporting any malfunctions to the supervisor.
  • Pull case carts accurately and deliver them to the OR in a timely manner.
  • Process items on the Needs List in a timely fashion.
  • Respond promptly and positively to customer requests, resolving issues effectively.
  • Accept temporary reassignments to address changes in workload.
  • Notify the supervisor immediately of instrument or supply needs.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, performing general cleaning of department surfaces, racks, shelves, and storage areas as needed.
  • Review the Communicator Book and Information Board, noting instruments or service charges requested by customers.
  • Complete annual education requirements and department in-services as scheduled.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1-2 years of experience as a sterile processing technician preferred.
  • Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Tech (CSPDT) within 1 year required or Certified in Sterile Processing Management (CSPM).
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Good public relations and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle high stress associated with high-volume critical care departments.
