Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Speech-Language Pathologist to join our team at the Alabama Department of Education. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, you will play a critical role in providing services to communicatively disabled students in our school system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide appropriate services to students with language, speech, or hearing disorders
  • Consult with teachers, parents, administrators, and staff to support academic achievement and school success
  • Serve as a student advocate, role model, and professional resource for parents, the community, and the school system
Requirements
  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  2. Certification as determined by the Alabama State Department of Education and the American Speech and Hearing Association
  3. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No
  4. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
  5. Knowledge to interpret assessment data, group students, and develop methodologies and strategies conducive to individualized instructional needs
  6. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
  7. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member
  8. Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
  9. Ability to collaborate and communicate with administrators, teachers, parents, and other school system staff to ensure the effective implementation of IEPs for designated students
  10. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities
  11. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance
  12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  1. Demonstrate support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities
  2. Organize and conduct language and speech screenings in the schools
  3. Organize and conduct hearing screenings in the schools
  4. Evaluate and diagnose children with speech and language disorders through the use of standardized tests
  5. Select children with clinical communicative disorders for enrollment in therapy
  6. Consult with principals and teachers regarding the arrangement of appropriate time schedules for children to be enrolled in therapy
  7. Coordinate the Language, Speech, and Hearing Services Program with other school programs
  8. Prescribe and implement therapy for those children with communicative disorders
  9. Provide individual and/or group therapy for children with language, speech, or hearing disorders
  10. Refer students to other school personnel for special services
  11. Participate as needed in IEP development, implementation, and meetings
  12. Refer students, when necessary, to various community agencies and physicians
  13. Provide information to teachers about pupil progress in therapy
  14. Provide consultative services to regular or special classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and parents in order to give them information on communicative skills development, special materials, and procedures to be used in helping children develop appropriate communicative behaviors
  15. Suggest materials for planning programs in speech improvement in the classroom
  16. Maintain appropriate records regarding children's progress in therapy
  17. Maintain records and medical information regarding children with hearing impairments in order to convey the needs of the child to the classroom teacher
  18. Conduct parent conferences
  19. Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters
  20. Demonstrate initiative in indemnifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility
  21. Work cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system's vision, goals, and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame
  22. Engage in personal professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics and effective leadership
  23. Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel
  24. Maintain confidentiality regarding student/school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law
  25. Respond to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner
  26. Maintain and submit required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
  27. Properly use and care for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervise and monitor students in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory
  28. Use effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member
  29. Serve on school system committees, task forces, and representative groups as required
  30. Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws
  31. Report absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures; prepare for substitutes according to Board policies and school procedures
  32. Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
