Job Summary

The Dental Hygienist provides educational, preventative, and therapeutic services administering oral hygiene within the scope of current Nebraska law and other applicable regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Performs and demonstrates dental hygiene services including taking accurate radiographs, dental prophylaxis, periodontal therapy and maintenance, administration of local anesthetics, placement of sealants, fluoride treatment, oral hygiene assessment and instruction, patient management, maintaining patient recurring care (recall) systems, and other dental tasks.
  2. Prepares treatment rooms, dental instruments, equipment, and materials necessary for effective patient care while following all appropriate asepsis procedures.
  3. Maintains accurate documentation in patient records.
  4. Provides patient education, post-operative instruction, and other information regarding care to patients or callers as needed.
  5. Maintains clinic flow via room turn-around, sterilization, stocking, and cleaning.
  6. Provides assistance, support, and relief to other dental team members with clinical, administrative, clerical, or business duties or other projects as necessary.
  7. Performs office and clerical procedures relative to patient records, appointments, and fees.
  8. Assists in maintaining an efficient, safe, secure, orderly, and aseptic environment of care for all patients and employees.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Duties 1 through 8 are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job. All other job duties are secondary functions.

Requirements
  • Ability to efficiently carry out Midtown Health's Center mission statement and comply with its policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, co-workers, and the public and to be able to demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information in accordance to HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to comply with all occupational safety and health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills to address clinic's needs.
  • Ability to interpret oral and written instructions and do appropriate follow-up.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must have exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to constructively participate in quality improvement efforts.
  • Ability to actively participate in marketing and outreach activities when requested and emergency response events when required.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) verbal and written skills highly desired.
  • Knowledge and excellent understanding of dental hygiene practice and protocol.
  • Ability to operate sterilizer, various dental instruments, and x-ray equipment.
  • Ability to navigate Dentrix.

Education and Experience, Licensure and Certification:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited school required.
  • Experience with digital x-rays and electronic dental records is preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to utilize own transportation for work purposes.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Requires frequent bending, stooping, or stretching.
  • Ability to reach by extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Vision and hearing within normal parameters to perform job requirements.

Working Conditions/Environment:

  • Ability to work varied and extended hour scheduling as requested including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.
  • Ability to work in a smoke-free and drug-free work environment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to significant work pace/pressure. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
