We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Recreation Specialist to join our team at Challenge Unlimited, Inc. in Alton, IL. As a Recreation Specialist, you will be responsible for developing and implementing recreational programs that promote participation, social interaction, and physical activity among individuals with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote person-centered services and provide quality care and support to individuals with disabilities in a community-based setting.
  • Plan, organize, and implement athletic and recreational programs that cater to diverse needs and abilities.
  • Facilitate programming for Special Olympic events, intramural sports, creative expression, games, fitness programs, special clubs, and community events.
  • Represent Residential Options as the head coach of Special Olympics and foster participation in various sports.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of residents by enforcing facility rules and guidelines while monitoring activities.
  • Record all accidents, injuries, and illnesses, maintaining accurate records.
  • Assess resident needs, abilities, and preferences to design engaging activities promoting skill development, creativity, and social interaction.
  • Adapt activities to ensure inclusivity, allowing all residents to participate regardless of ability.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, schools, and government agencies to develop partnerships supporting recreational initiatives.
  • Promote recreational programs through marketing, advertising, flyers, outreach events, and community meetings.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and staff involved in recreational programs.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through feedback and participation rates, making adjustments to improve outcomes.
  • Coordinate the use of recreational facilities, including scheduling events.
  • Manage budget for recreational programs, tracking expenditures, preparing reports, and optimizing resource allocation.

Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; preference given to Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Special Education, or related field.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience working with individuals with disabilities.
  • Electronic document systems and service experience highly preferred.
  • Background checks: Must pass criminal background check, state/federal registry checks, child abuse & neglect background check.
  • Training: CPR/1st Aid, Crisis Prevention Institute, DSP training provided by the company (must be completed within 4 months and annually thereafter).
  • Driving: Valid driver's license, driving history check, and at least 21 years old to drive company van.
  • Travel: 50% travel between IL sites for meetings, trainings, and agency visits.

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting: Frequently sitting in office-sedentary type work.
  • Standing: Occasionally standing, walking, bending, squatting, reaching, and twisting to assist Residents.
  • Hearing: Frequently listening and speaking with managers, customers, employees, and residents.
  • Seeing: Visually active to read information on screens or in print.
  • Handling: Frequently using hands for typing, calculating, filing, phone, and equipment use.
  • Movement: Occasionally bending, reaching, twisting, climbing stairs, and kneeling.
  • Lifting: Occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs in office work.

Estimated Salary Range: $40,000 - $55,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
