Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Database Administrator Team Lead to join our team at Churchill Downs Incorporated. This is a critical role that requires a strong technical background, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to manage complex database systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day activities of the Database Administrators, providing functional operational support for existing properties.
  • Conduct stand-up meetings and manage workloads of the team.
  • Mentor team members as needed.
  • Research, implement, and operate all software and RDBMS systems aligned with their functional area.
  • Develop, implement, document, and maintain all processes and policies for the functional area.
  • Demonstrate strong project management skills, and the ability to serve in a technical advisory capacity to executives and project managers with respect to design and architecture of systems and applications.
  • Work to define and enhance IT policies and processes for their area across all properties.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ensure the successful and continued operation of the company's enterprise systems and services.
  • Participate in the management and deployment of RDBMS server environments.
  • Ensure servers and applications are backed up and adhere to data retention policies regarding regulatory guidelines and best practices.
  • Review and patch servers/systems as required by security policies and initiatives.
  • Monitor and respond to systems outages as required.
  • Respond to support calls in an on-call rotation.
  • Work as a member of a project team to deliver new business systems.
  • Create, provide, and articulate required reports for management.
  • Work towards standardizing methods and processes, while achieving a strong security posture across all properties.
Requirements
  • 4-year degree in IT/IS or other closely related discipline; may consider experience and certifications for degree requirement.
  • Experience with public cloud services and providers such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
  • 3 or more industry specific certifications such as MTA, MCSA or MCSE.
  • Experience with C# /.Net, Powershell.
  • 7+ years creating, managing and administrating MS SQL Server databases.
  • Provide database administration and support for SQL Servers at all CDI properties (SQL 2012 and newer).
  • Apply and monitor database backup schedules and retention policies.
  • Configure and support SQL Server replication between properties.
  • Monitor SQL Server counters and troubleshoot performance issues related to the following: low memory, high CPU utilization, index fragmentation, missing indexes, disk contention, blocking sessions, and queries.
  • Develop and support SQL jobs and SSIS packages for data imports, exports, and transformations.
  • Construct new reports and support SQL Server Reporting Services environment.
  • Verify database backups (transaction log backups for databases in FULL recovery mode).
  • Verify replication agents are working.
  • Verify SQL Server jobs and SSIS packages.
  • Ensuring corporate security standards have been applied and maintained.
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Comfortable with fast paced work environment.
  • Willingness and ability to coach and mentor other team members.
  • Familiar with SQL Encryption (at rest and in transit).
  • Experience with Fail Over HA and Always On clustering.
Working Conditions

The ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast-paced environment, with extended periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Regular use of a keyboard and mouse for typing and navigating software is required. The ability to manipulate paperwork, including filing, sorting, and organizing, is also necessary. Occasional lifting of office supplies or paperwork (up to 20 pounds) may be required. Speaking and listening to colleagues and clients in person, over the phone, or via video conferencing is a must. Working in a climate-controlled office environment with moderate noise levels is typical of this role.
