Job Description:

As a Registered Nurse in our Step Down Unit, you will provide care for patients who require close monitoring and frequent assessment but are not unstable enough to require ICU care. You will monitor critical vital signs and detect any changes, enabling intervention in life-threatening or emergency situations. You will also care for patients transitioning from the ICU as part of a progressive care unit, demonstrating competencies in basic and advanced life support. You will use dysrhythmia monitoring techniques, interpretation, and calculation of medication dosages, as well as monitor patient reactions and administer continuous medication infusions. You will also monitor patients using standardized procedures pre-, intra-, and post-procedures such as TEE, cardiac catheterization with PCI, cardioversion, bronchoscopy, EGD, PEG placement, and chest tube insertion. You will recognize symptoms and signs of cardiopulmonary emergencies and initiate standard interventions to stabilize patients. You will set up and troubleshoot hemodynamic monitoring, recognizing signs of patient instability. You will interpret ABGs and communicate findings effectively. You will assess ventilated patients to ensure prescribed treatments are being delivered and properly responded to. You will manage patients requiring non-invasive oxygen delivery systems. You will understand and assess long-term mechanical ventilation and weaning processes. You will manage and assess patients needing renal therapeutic interventions such as hemodialysis. You will recognize indications for and complications of enteral and parenteral nutrition. You will evaluate family needs for involvement in care to aid in patient transition from hospital to home. You will exhibit characteristics such as advocacy, clinical judgment, caring practices, systems thinking, response to diversity, collaboration, and clinical inquiry. You will serve as an educator to patients and families.
