School Law Clerk: Prosecution of Expulsion Hearings

  • The Law Clerk represents the Board of Education in expulsion hearings for students accused of violating the Chicago Public Schools Student Code of Conduct. In addition to prosecuting expulsion hearings, law clerks may represent the Board in other administrative hearings and conduct legal research for the School Law Unit. The ideal candidate will be able to commit approximately 15-17 weeks during the months of October through December.

This is an unpaid position, and the Law Clerk may be eligible to receive academic credit for their work from their law school.

Responsibilities:

  1. Review, analyze, prepare, and present evidence and witnesses for administrative hearings
  2. Prepare and conduct opening and closing statements during administrative hearings
  3. Describe the expectations of the administrative hearings to administrators, witnesses, parents, and students
  4. Conduct direct and cross-examination of witnesses during administrative hearings
  5. Conduct factual and legal research for School Law Attorneys

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Currently enrolled in law school, required
  • Completed coursework in Evidence and/or Trial Advocacy

  • Ability to articulate a vision and set high standards
  • Ability to quickly analyze and solve issues that occur
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with various constituent groups

Compensation: The estimated annual salary for this role is $60,000-$80,000 based on the location and industry standards.
