Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing moderately complex custodial work in an assigned area. The successful candidate will be responsible for cleaning and caring for Department of Public Safety buildings and premises, maintaining custodial equipment, and requesting supplies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows, light fixtures, and carpet.
  • Perform restroom maintenance, replenish supplies, and apply cleaning chemicals as appropriate.
  • Clean office furniture, walls, and windows, empty trash, and clean offices in entirety.
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect areas such as restrooms, offices, and other facilities.
  • Perform carpet maintenance and care.
  • Clean drapes, upholstery, and clean and repair venetian blinds and curtain rods.
  • Assist in moving furniture due to cleaning, office rearrangements, or special events.
  • Operate floor maintenance equipment, including buffers, strippers, vacuums, and extractors.
  • May be required to provide clean towels and linens for dormitory beds and gather soiled towels and linens for laundering by a service vendor.
  • May be required to clean and sanitize dormitory rooms, periodically air out mattresses, sanitize the gym area, including disinfecting the exercise equipment, door handles, fans, etc., sweeping, and wet mopping the rubber matting and other detail work as needed or instructed.
  • May perform minor equipment repair on custodial equipment.
  • May maintain and restock custodial supply closets.
  • May perform limited yard work, including mowing, trimming shrubs in designated areas only, edging, pulling weeds, sweeping sidewalks, picking up trash on the ground, clean courtyard areas, and empty trash cans/ash trays near proximity of the building.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of responsible work experience in cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.
  • Ability to adequately perform assigned custodial work.
  • Ability to use modern electrical equipment such as floor maintenance machines, high-speed buffers, carpet shampooers, extractors, automatic scrubbers, pressure washers, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand warning labels on caustic cleaning chemicals.
  • Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy, and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers.

  • Must demonstrate an ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able to identify trends, relationships, and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance, and dissemination of information.
  • Must be able to work in a safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.
  • Availability for after-hour and weekend work is required for special projects.

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Office/Indoors and/or Outdoors seasonally.
  • Ambulatory skills, e.g. stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel.
  • Hand-eye coordination and arm/hand/finger dexterity.
  • Ability to speak, hear, and exercise visual acuity.
  • Ability to transfer weights of up to fifty (50) pounds anticipated for this position.
  • Driving requirements: Occasional (up to 5%).
