Job Summary

As an Emergency Communications Specialist with Craven County Government, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. This position involves operating advanced telecommunications equipment to receive and transmit emergency calls for law enforcement and emergency services programs. You will be responsible for dispatching personnel and officials, providing information to the public, and maintaining accurate records of complaints and services requested.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate emergency communication systems to receive, transmit, and record messages for emergency medical services, law enforcement, and other emergency response agencies.
• Receive complaints and requests for service by telephone or radio, and dispatch appropriate personnel or officials as needed.
• Maintain computer log systems, performing routine maintenance of equipment and work area, and coordinating repair of equipment as necessary.
• Provide information to the public as requested, and screen emergency calls for assistance in a standardized manner using Priority Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols.
• Inform emergency response personnel of severe weather warnings provided by the National Weather Service and other agencies.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school, with some experience in telecommunications preferred.
• Ability to attend and pass the Telecommunicators course given by Sheriff Training and Standards or their education agent.
• Ability to obtain International Academics of Emergency Dispatch (IAED), Priority Medical Dispatch Certification, Office of Emergency Medical Service (OEMS), and Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification within 1 year of employment.
