Conservation Leadership Specialist

This exciting opportunity with North Dakota State University seeks a highly skilled Conservation Leadership Specialist to contribute to the success of our team. As part of our esteemed institution, you will work collaboratively with colleagues to provide conservation planning and leadership development support for Soil Conservation Districts in North Dakota. This is a full-time, three-year term position based in a mutually agreed-upon NDSU Extension Office or approved remote location.
About the Role
As a key member of our team, your primary responsibilities will include facilitating SCD-based conservation planning through a structured, collaborative process. You will work closely with SCD supervisors and staff to create educational opportunities, materials, and workshops that address the needs and issues of those working on soil and water-related matters. Your experience in designing and delivering educational programs, as well as your knowledge of Soil Conservation District structure and function in North Dakota, will be invaluable assets in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate SCD-based conservation planning through a structured, collaborative process.
- Assist with project development to address specific resource needs identified in SCD Conservation plans.
- Conduct needs assessment and issues identification that result in program curricula based on the needs of those working on soil and water-related issues.
- Work with SCD supervisors and staff to create educational opportunities, materials, and workshops to address those needs and issues.
- Develop and encourage strong partnerships among SCDs, Extension, local citizens, federal and state agencies, agricultural organizations, non-profit organizations, and other groups.
- Document and evaluate program successes and challenges and use evaluation to improve future efforts.
- Provide support for SCDs in locating and applying for external funding.
- Be self-directed with minimal supervision in the work environment.
- Frequent day trips within the SCD Area are required, with occasional overnight in-state travel expected.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need a Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the responsibilities of the position, as well as skills that demonstrate knowledge and expertise in leadership and community development, natural resources management, or other related fields. Basic computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are also essential. In addition, you will need to be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media.
Preferred Qualifications
A Master's degree in a discipline related to the responsibilities of the position, recent work experience in Extension or working with Soil Conservation Districts, and experience working with agricultural producers and/or individuals involved in agriculture are all highly desirable. Working knowledge of Soil Conservation District structure and function in North Dakota, as well as experience designing and delivering educational programs, will also be beneficial in this role.

Salary and Benefits
The estimated salary for this position is $65,000 - $75,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. NDSU offers a comprehensive benefits package, including single or family health insurance coverage with premiums paid for by the university, wellness benefits, basic life insurance, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual leave, EAP, sick leave, and holiday pay. Optional benefits include supplemental life, dental, vision, long-term care insurance, flexible spending account, and supplemental retirement plans.
