Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Commercial Lines Underwriter to join our team at Frank Winston Crum Insurance. As a Commercial Lines Underwriter, you will be responsible for acquiring, developing, and maintaining profitable new and renewal commercial lines accounts, including workers' compensation, general liability, and property insurance. You will work closely with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders to evaluate individual risks, understand market conditions, and provide excellent customer service to current and prospective clients.

Key Responsibilities

Provides guidance and serves as a mentor to new hires, underwriting assistants, and junior underwriters.
Reviews individual account transactions and manages assigned agents/book of business to achieve new business, renewal retention, and loss ratio objectives in support of strategic planning initiatives.
Reviews new business application information, including STPs for completeness, and verifies that the exposure submitted is covered within FWCI underwriting guidelines.
Coordinates with internal and external representatives, agents, and their assistants to obtain complete submission information, including gathering missing details, clarifying inconsistencies, and validating third-party information.
Assembles information, analyzes loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks, develops recommendations, and clearly expresses decisions using sound reasoning and judgment in accordance with FWCI underwriting guidelines and established rating rules and regulations.
Decides whether to approve, deny, or modify insurance policies based on risk assessment and sets appropriate premiums, coverage, and deductible limits.
Maintains accurate and detailed records of underwriting decisions and assessments, ensuring compliance with documentation standards and procedures.
Communicates effectively and responds to agent/external representative inquiries regarding risk eligibility, underwriting appetite, new business, renewals, endorsements, rate changes, coverages, limits of insurance, and system navigation through verbal and/or written means.
Supports the Business Development Team by participating in telephone, video, and in-person meetings with agent personnel.
Collaborates with other departments, such as claims and marketing, to ensure a coordinated approach to risk management.
Reviews audit underwriting alerts to determine what actions and/or adjustments, if any, must be made to the current and expired policies.
Reviews Loss Control and Injury Reports completed by the FWCI Risk Management Department and responds with recommendations in accordance with FWCI underwriting guidelines.
Reviews existing policies during renewals and endorsements and assesses if any modifications are necessary, adjusting premiums and coverage based on changes in risk factors.
Works as a problem solver and solution facilitator to address agent, internal department, client, or vendor issues.
Works on a wide variety of special projects as assigned by management.

Requirements

A minimum of three (3) years prior experience in commercial insurance, including agency and/or underwriting.
Workers' Compensation and Commercial General Liability experience desired.
An associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
