Nurse Specialist in Med Surg Care

We are seeking a skilled Registered Nurse to join our team at Margaret Mary Health. As a Med Surg Nurse, you will provide exceptional patient care and contribute to the well-being of our patients.
About the RoleThis is a PRN - Nights position in our Hospital setting, where you will be responsible for providing nursing care to patients of all age populations.
Responsibilities- You will use approved abbreviations and understand patient safety goals and actions taken.
- Demonstrate awareness of patient rights and use two patient identifiers before giving treatments.
- Understand read back of verbal orders/critical lab values and can state the process.
- Understand procedure to clarify physician orders and use standing orders when indicated.
- Accurately call report to MD as warranted by condition and report to other providers as needed.
- Report sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
- Use final verification before invasive procedures and can verbalize correct process and document in EHR.
- Reassess patient in response to changes in condition after intervention as needed and document in EHR.
- Communicate with and provide education to patients, caregivers, and family members in a timely manner and document in EHR.
- Initiate care plans within 8 hours of admission and update on a daily basis.
- Use aggressive pain management by assessing for pain a minimum of every 2 hours and document in EHR.
- Provide education to patients and family and document in EHR in a timely manner.
- Admit patients to unit within 2 hours of arrival to include physical, functional, skin, safety, and pain assessments and document in EHR.
- Transfer patients using the appropriate criteria and document in EHR, including sending necessary forms with patient and calling report.
- Provide basic nursing care: ADLs, HS care, foley care, weights, etc. correctly and timely and document in EHR.
- Apply physical restraints according to policy.
- Use MET team in response to deterioration in patient condition.
- Knowledgeable of high-risk meds and can state correct process of administration.
- Knowledgeable of look alike/sound alike meds and can give examples of such.
- Administer narcotics timely as ordered and assure correct documentation and counts.
- Can indicate process of obtaining meds after hours and which meds can be given before reviewed by pharmacy.
- Understand what meds can be given by what discipline and can state examples.
- Use appropriate techniques when administering meds which require calculations.
- Maintain security of narcotics/drugs by keeping drawers locked and keys (if applicable) in possession of staff at all times.
- Use Omnicell to obtain, waste, and return medications.
- Demonstrate proper use of bar code scanning.
- Process instruments per protocol and can state process.
- Clean patient care items as needed and keep room clean and tidy.
- Know how to check for negative pressure in isolation rooms.
- Check crash cart according to policy.
- Place Peds sensors on correctly and document in EHR.
- Use IV pumps with all IVs and label correctly.
- Aware of door alarms and security methods of MS/SCA.
- Restock supplies when needed to PAR levels.
- Identify patients as fall risk, follow protocol, and document in EHR.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A strong customer service skillset and ability to work as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills both verbally and written.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Basic nursing skills and ability to operate medical equipment.
- Supervisory experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
The estimated salary for this position is $55,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on experience. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
