Job Summary

Shriners Children's is seeking a compassionate and skilled Child Life Specialist to join our team. As a Child Life Specialist, you will play a vital role in minimizing anxiety and aiding children and adolescents in coping with the hospital experience. Your expertise will promote normal growth and development through provision of age-appropriate opportunities for play, learning, self-expression, family involvement, and peer interaction.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of children's development, temperament, coping style, medical plans, and available social supports to develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Utilize developmentally appropriate methods to prepare children and families for diagnostic and treatment procedures, and provide emotional support during identified stress points.
  • Facilitate therapeutic play programs in cooperation with the Activities Coordinators, promoting self-healing, self-expression, understanding, and mastery.
  • Maintain working relationships with parents and families, providing supportive services to the entire family unit, and supporting family bonds and utilizing family strengths in the care of the child.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and/or supervise activities for patients, including special events, outside group entertainment, patient birthday parties, and in-house group programs.
  • Support the School re-entry program by working cooperatively with the team in preparing patients for re-entry to their home schools, and when appropriate, travel to the patient's home school to directly implement the re-entry.
  • Plan and coordinate therapeutic outings with the TR Specialist as appropriate for patient care.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Child Life Certificate, or proof of eligibility
  • CPR

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree
  • Previous experience working with hospitalized and health children
  • Background in Child Development, Child Life, Psychology, or similar field
