Assistant Government Editor Leader

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Government Editor Leader to lead our government team at The Seattle Times. This role involves guiding our coverage of elected officials, elections, policy-making, and the impact of policies on communities at the federal, state, and local levels.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in news editing, excellent writing skills, and the ability to collaborate with reporters and other editors. A proven track record of generating investigative and enterprise stories that drive change is essential.

Salary: $77,700 to $106,800 per annum.

Job Description:

This position requires a skilled editor with expertise in government coverage, including analyzing facts, making judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, and fairness. Strong communication and collaboration skills are necessary for working with fellow editors, reporters, and other departments.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least five years' experience at a metro daily or other news organization, including supervisory experience;
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in watchdog and accountability journalism, including filing public-record requests and searching databases;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and execute meaningful coverage of elections.
