Medical Assistant Certified Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Take medical histories and record vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients and preparing them for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests in the clinic/office, and taking electrocardiograms.
  • Remove sutures/staples, change sterile and non-sterile dressings, promote patient/family understanding of educational content and their involvement in the plan of care, and document in the patient record.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies, process instruments, perform high-level disinfection and sterilization of medical instruments, telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, and authorize drug refills as directed.
  • Perform other clinical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician.
Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Greet patients, answer telephones, schedule appointments, check out patients, and refer patients to other healthcare services.
  • Arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services, update and file patient medical records, fill out insurance forms, handle billing, bookkeeping, and receive copays and collections on account balances.
  • Correspond with patients, families, and healthcare providers, and order clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
Requirements:
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required.
  • BLS required.
  • Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred.
  • High school or GED graduation required.
