Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Histocompatibility Technologist to join our Transplant Laboratory team at The University of Chicago Medicine. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in supporting the UCM Transplant Institute and performing testing for both patient and potential transplant donors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of clinical analyses in all sections of the laboratory, utilizing various methodologies and instrumentation.
  • Adhere to and assist in enforcing policies and procedures to ensure results of the highest level of quality to physicians and their patients.
  • Provide technical leadership to Histocompatibility technologists and serve as a primary specialist in the development and evaluation of new methodologies and instrumentation.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining continual compliance with policies, procedures, and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of accrediting or regulatory agencies.
  • Provide specialized support in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new clinical laboratory procedures, equipment, and processes.
  • Lead and/or participate in process improvements and other quality functions.
  • Serve as a technical resource to answer questions and troubleshoot issues.
  • Attend training sessions, seminars, and workshops to maintain and enhance necessary clinical laboratory science skills.
  • Assist in training new employees, students, pathology residents, and others.
Requirements
  • Must satisfy CLIA 88 qualification requirements for testing personnel performing high complexity testing.
  • Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least three years prior work experience required for certified individuals with practical clinical laboratory experience or a minimum of five years of pertinent clinical laboratory work experience for non-certified individuals.
  • Knowledge and ability to use laboratory/hospital information systems.
  • Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge or training in southern blot and other molecular biology protocols.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to stand, stretch, and bend for majority of time worked; ability to lift 30 pounds; exceptional organizational skills; attention to detail mandatory; ability to work in stressful situations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification or eligibility as Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) through the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) with Certification or eligibility as Medical Technologist (MT), or specialist (S) through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent.
